Culture Tour

If you love your biking but you also have a desire to discover the cultural side of places you visit then Ae Adventure has the perfect holiday lined up for you.

The southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada are home to an area steeped in history and known as Las Alpujarras. An area once home to the Moors before they were chased out by the Christian Crusaders, it still holds the hallmarks of the old civilisation with its terraced landscape and ancient irrigation systems. These have been slightly updated but the old ways are still used to sustain the crops today. Visiting Las Alpujarras gives you a chance to witness first hand one of the last areas in Europe where much of the work is still carried out by traditional methods. Shepherds still take there flocks into the mountains at the crack of dawn and the trails they have carved through the Sierra Nevada make some of the most incredible mountain bike routes!

The mountain biking terrain in Las Alpujarras is varied and you will experience everything from incredible sections of single track, stunning forest trails, some great riding through the narrow streets of the villages and much, much more.

You can head out on the trails most days to get a real taste of the mountain biking of the area before immersing yourself in the cultural delights of the region of Granada.

One of the nearby villages has a museum which houses a fascinating collection of a local man who travelled far and wide and donated his house and its contents to the village of his birth. The museum guide is quite a character and we wouldn’t want to spoil your surprise at what exactly the museum holds but we can guarantee you will be amazed at the contents of this special place. It has a real mix of traditional agricultural implements through a broad range of historical Spanish artefacts and a personal collection of some bizarre and brilliant memorabilia from the home owner’s travels.

A visit to Granada would not be complete without a trip to the Alhambra. Short listed as one of the modern wonders of the world this spectacular collection of palaces and gardens overlooking the city of Granada is the most visited monument in Spain. Once you have been yourself you will know why. You will also get to visit the mountain village of Trevelaz, which is the highest village in Spain.

Most nights you’ll also get to sample the delights of the Ae Adventure chef. Freshly prepared home cooked healthy meals using locally grown produce will be served up through the week. You will be delighted at the standard and our guest book comments pay testament to the quality of the food you’ll be served whilst you stay here.

There is also a free bar stocked with beer and wine.

Some nights you might look to head down into the local village, Valor, where there is a choice of some great local bars and restaurants. Valor was the birthplace of the last Moorish King, Aben Humeya and the bars in the village still serve traditional tapas (small plates of food) and these come free with every drink you buy. The village is stunning, clean and the locals are very friendly.

Back to the biking though and you’ll get to head up to some of the high points in the area where you will be amazed as you take in the scenery. At some places on a clear day you can see all the way across the Mediterranean to Africa. Ae Adventure has a support driver who takes care of drop offs and pick ups which allows you to see more of the region on your mountain bike..

Incidentally the region gets more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Europe. Just thought you might appreciate that fact as well!

Cost £645 + flights.
